


The Joy of True Learning: Why Every Child Deserves This Experience
Today, I walked into Uhuru Shule Cooperative and saw something that brought tears to my eyes. The boys were deeply focused, working with determination and joy. Their teacher moved with calm, purposeful energy, creating an environment where learning wasn’t forced—it flowed naturally.
It was a space filled with support, high expectations, and love. The children were happy, fully engaged, and thriving.
As I stood there, I wished this experience could be the reality for every child.

This vision isn’t just about my school. It’s about reimagining education for all children, especially those who have been historically underserved, misunderstood, or overlooked.
Breaking Free From the Optics of Excellence
In today’s culture—especially in education—optics often matter more than outcomes. Schools are pressured to look excellent, with shiny presentations and test scores, while the deeper question goes unanswered:
What does a truly successful education look like for your child?
As parents and educators, we must be willing to look beyond smoke and mirrors. Ask yourself:
- Is my child’s learning experience rich, meaningful, and joyful?
- Are they being nurtured, challenged, and seen for who they are?
- Does the school environment prepare them not just for tests, but for life?
Why the Traditional System Often Falls Short
As a former public school principal and administrator, I’ve seen both sides. There are incredible educators working tirelessly within public schools.
But the structure of large institutions often makes it nearly impossible to fully meet the diverse needs of every child.
This is especially true for Black gifted children, who are too often underidentified and underserved. Research highlights this challenge:
“Black students are historically underrepresented in gifted education programs, even when they demonstrate equal or higher ability compared to their peers.” – National Association for Gifted Children
When high-potential students don’t receive proper nurturing and support, they risk becoming disengaged or underachieving, which can have long-term consequences for their academic and social development.
What Children Truly Deserve
The scene I witnessed at Uhuru Shule was proof of what’s possible.
Children, without being prompted, were working hard, collaborating, and joyfully learning. Their focus was intrinsic, not driven by fear or external pressure.
This is what education should feel like every day.
We operate within the Northeastern Center for Inner City Studies, a space rooted in Black excellence, culture, and history. It’s more than just a location—it’s a spiritual reminder that our work is part of a much larger legacy of empowerment and liberation.

Scaling the Vision
My deepest question right now is:
How do we scale this experience so more children can benefit?
How do we help families understand that stepping outside the traditional lines of education doesn’t mean giving kids less—it often means giving them so much more?
It takes:
- Courageous families willing to try something new.
- Community partners and donors ready to invest in innovation.
- Educators committed to doing the hard, beautiful work of reimagining school.
